Experiences with Evaluating Network QoS for IP Telephony

چکیده
Successful deployment of networked multimedia applications such as IP Telephony depends on the performance of the underlying data network. QoS requirements of these applications are different from those of traditional data applications. For example, while IP Telephony is very sensitive to delay and jitter, traditional data applications are more tolerant of these performance metrics. Consequently, assessing a network to determine whether it can accommodate the stringent QoS requirements of IP Telephony becomes critical. In this paper we describe a technique for evaluating a network for IP Telephony readiness. Our technique relies on the data collection and analysis support of our prototype tool, ExamiNet TM. ExamiNetTM automatically discovers the topology of a given network and collects and integrates network device performance and voice quality metrics. We report the results of assessing the IP Telephony readiness of a real network of 31 network devices (routers/switches) and 23 hosts via ExamiNetTM. Our evaluation identified links in the network that were over utilized to the point at which they could not handle IP Telephony.

Assessing network readiness for IP telephony
Networked multimedia applications require stringent real-time QoS guarantees. Successful deployment of such applications closely depends on the performance of the underlying data network. The characteristics and the QoS requirements of these applications are different from traditional data applications. Hence, prior to deployment it is necessary to evaluate a network from a multimedia perspecti...
متن کاملSimple On-Demand Overlays for Reliable Real-Time Traffic in Enterprise Networks
Real-time applications such as IP Telephony demand strict quality of service (QoS) from the underlying network. As more enterprises deploy IP Telephony, it is becoming imperative to significantly improve the network reliability as seen by these applications. As such, we recently proposed a practical overlay architecture, ORBIT (Overlays providing Reliability for Better IP Telephony). Our archit...
متن کاملInternet QoS Routing with IP Telephony and TCP Traffic
In this paper, we propose the use of QoS routing to enhance the support of IP Telephony. Our proposed scheme is based on QoS intradomain OSPF routing, an extension of the conventional OSPF routing protocol. A Diff Serv model is used (no per flow signalling, nor per flow accounting at intermediate nodes). Processing O/H is shifted from core to edge routers, which compute routes, monitor QoS path...
متن کاملTraffic Analysis for Voice in Wireless IP Networks
In this paper we provide an extensive analysis of voice service in wireless IP networks. Voice traffic is serviced with priority over the rest of the traffic. Hence, we concentrate on the voice traffic in the analysis. We model the packetized voice traffic with Markov Modulated Poisson Process (MMPP), and we propose an analytical framework for its analysis in wireless networks. Also, we created...
متن کاملA Study of QoS Sensitive Pricing for IP Telephony
While Internet Telephony (IP Telephony) encompasses many different architectures and services, the key idea is the transport of real-time voice traffic over the Internet. IP Telephony architecture [2] allows the entire end-to-end path or a portion thereof to be routed over the Internet. The endpoints are regular personal computers (PCs) that are equipped with IP Telephony software which allows ...
